HOME Therachew History of Dog Chew
It is our goal and mission to keep our pets happy and harm-free from various risk factors. It is also our mission not to use artificial flavors or preservatives in our products.
Even though dogs have been domesticated for a long time, their oral structure is not much different from that of wolves. Being carnivores, dogs are more prone to bite and gnaw rather than chew, and these characteristics remain today. It is their instinct to bite on meat on bones.
And often times, this desire cannot be satisfied with what humans general give them to eat. In addition, to minimize the irritation coming from losing baby teeth, dogs need something to chew on to satisfy their gnawing instinct.
This is how 1st generation dog chews were made. The inner skin of cows were used as the main ingredients and were made to resemble a bone, to fulfill a dog's urge to bite on meat on bones. Pig ears or dried meat were also used as ingredients. These ingredients were all helpful in fulfilling the dog's urge to bite and gnaw on things. Due to mass production, however, there were concerns over the safety of these products. Although high quality cow leather should have been used as the main ingredient to ensure safety, dog chews were often made with leather left over from the leather bag or shoe industry. Chemicals and bleach remaining in the leftover leather often led to health concerns. Making dog chews out of clean cow inner skin was costly, and differentiating between safe and unsafe products turned out to be difficult.
2nd generation dog chews,
2nd generation dog chews were developed through efforts to overcome the safety issues raised by 1st generation dog chews. Companies became more safety-conscious regarding their product by using controllable ingredients, such as starch, and were able to offer dog chews in a variety of shapes.
Attracting customers who were aware of safety and health, 2nd generation dog chews seemed to be totally different from 1st generation dog chews. However, chews made with starch could not adequately fulfill the dog's urge to bite and chew because they crumbled easily into bits and pieces. They were better suited for herbivores, but not for dogs.
3rd generation dog chews.
Dog chews needed to be made of safe ingredients, while still fulfilling a dog's urge to bite and chew. We were faced with the need to make dog chews using vegetable protein, while having the texture of animal protein. Dog chews that can be stored for a long period of time and maintain the texture of animal protein are known as 3rd generation dog chews.
3rd generation dog chews, which use vegetable protein, yet have a texture similar to animal protein, serve to fulfill a dog's urge to chew and guarantee safety. Like the 2nd generation products, 3rd generation dog chews are also made in different shapes. In particular, they are made in special shapes, which are helpful for maintaining good oral health. In other words, these dog chews have begun to play a similar role to tooth brushing.
Dog chews in the future
3rd generation dog chews have meat-like textures. This provides great pleasure for dogs while fulfilling their urges. Dog chews, using controllable ingredients and manufactured in different shapes, can be used as a great DDS (Drug Delivery System). In other words, vitamins and other health supplements can be made into dog chew forms and be administered to dogs on a regular and continuous basis. This frees dogs from stressful medications and owners from difficult feeding procedures.
These can probably be referred to as 4th generation dog chews.
Again, it is our goal and mission to keep our pets happy and harm-free from various risk factors. We are also dedicated to not using artificial flavors or preservatives in our products. We believe that this will lead to the happiness of owners and result in better bonds with their pets.
